The pierced frame construction, instead of the cross members setting on top of the runners, there are matching slots cut in the frame runners which allow the cross members to slide through both sides of the frame. The cross members are then welded into the frame. This give two advantages:
The frame is much stronger and rigid
The over deck height is lower.
